I have many happy memories of gathering conkers from the huge horse chestnut tree in the front garden of Silver Birches. Bampa showed us how to tell when they were ready, and we conducted various experiments on how to make the sturdiest specimens for playing conkers. Soaking in vinegar, baking in the oven, and laquering with nail varnish were all tried!
